The Blue Hour - Rooms that Preaches

Highlight

When the sun goes down and darkness takes over, there is a brief moment when everything seems to stand still. Give yourself over to 'The Blue Hour': A sensory and circular total installation in the Church of Our Lady created by Den Sorte Skole and Spøgelsesmaskinen.

'The Blue Hour' is a term that covers the time of day when the sun sets and a bluish light appears. A magically beautiful time of day that we often forget to enjoy in the midst of a busy and hectic everyday life.

During the Festival Week, we offer you the opportunity to experience this natural phenomenon in a very special setting.

Slow down when we open the doors to Vor Frue Kirke every evening and immerse yourself in 'The Blue Hour' - a circular installation developed specifically for the church space where sound, light and the cycle of nature merge.

Strong team of artists behind it

The sound wizards from The Black School composed and recorded the music, which is based on the so-called 'Shepard's tone'. A sound that creates the illusion of a perpetual drop in pitch and mirrors the repeating pattern of the day at dusk by constantly returning to its starting point.

The lighting design is created by artist Spøgelsesmaskinen (Rune Brink Hansen) and follows the same cyclical logic. 10 lamps in blue glass and metal are placed in a circle. These lamps amplify the transition between light and darkness and form a parallel to the natural course of dusk outside.

'The Blue Hour' is a shining example of the anniversary theme 'Aarhus Festival - no age' and its focus on time. The passage of time in the changing seasons and days, the time we share and the value of time for contemplation and reflection, which 'The Blue Hour' is an important reminder of.

'The Blue Hour' is curated by Majken Overgaard.
