The court in Aarhus is the setting for the first part of the large-scale three-year opera 'The Right of the Strong - The Duty of the Weak', which will premiere during Aarhus Festival.

The description could sound like our chaotic and threatening present, but we are placed way back in fairy tale time in the opera 'The Right of the Strong - The Duty of the Weak' created by the Reumert-nominated duo of composer Niels Rønsholdt and director Louise Beck.
A spectacular opera whose three parts will be performed in three different locations across the country over the next three years. Join us from the start when the first part unfolds in the Court in Aarhus during this year's Festival.
Family tragedy born out of inferiority and lust for power
The story in 'The Right of the Strong - The Duty of the Weak' is a classic family tragedy about death and misfortune with the king Angantyr and his daughter Hervør at the centre.
The first part centres on the fateful meeting between the dead ruler and his daughter, who seeks out her father in the burial mound to get his weapon, the cursed sword Tyrfin, referred to in the story simply as 'the weapon' to emphasise the timelessness of the story.
As the new leader, Hervør is driven by a huge inferiority complex and is blinded by a great lust for power. She denigrates all knowledge and reason, mocks the past to write her own history and cracks down on any contradiction. Her time is now and her strongest weapon on her way to the top, besides the sword Tyrfin, is to cover up, denigrate and spread lies and rumours to oppress and divide the world around her. Including her own kin.
Opera i usædvanlige rammer
Magtbegrebet ”del og hersk” baserer sig på dét at isolere, splitte, at tilbageholde viden og sammenhænge. Det kommer til fulde til udtryk i forestillingens første del i det tidligere Rigsarkiv, hvor publikum adskilles og mister overblikket.
Den historiske bygning, også kendt som Smykkeskrinet, er normalt ikke tilgængelig for offentligheden, og det er tilmed første gang, at et nyt værk skrives direkte til den specielle ramme.
Første del af ’Den Stærkes Ret – Den Svages Pligt’ bliver opført i Rigsarkivets gamle læsesal, der har en fantastisk akustik, så publikum kan se frem til en usædvanlig, interaktiv og klingende musikoplevelse, fremført af to af landets bedste kor, Ars Nova Copenhagen og Ensemble Edge fra Aarhus.
’Den Stærkes Ret – Den Svages Pligt’ er et møde mellem en gammel og en ny verdensorden, der i løbet af forestillingen kæmper om det sidste ord; den gamle for at advare imod brugen af våbnet, den nye for at trodse alle advarsler og definere en ny våbenmagt.

- Forestillingen er produceret af OPE-N i samarbejde med Aarhus Festuge, CPH Operafestival og i samråd med Det Kgl. Bibliotek, Københavns Universitet og Sagnlandet Lejr.
- Første del finder sted i Retten i Aarhus i forbindelse med Aarhus Festuge 2025.
Anden del opføres i Københavns Universitets bibliotekssal i 2026 .Tredje og sidste del opføres i Kongehallen i Sagnlandet Lejre i 2027. - Første del af forestillingen kan opleves i dagene 4-6. september 2025 kl. 17., 19. og 21. Forestillingen varer ca. 45 minutter.
