Coasters, Carolinere and Frederiksværkere

Step aboard the vintage coaster Caroline S from Svendborg and step into a living maritime time capsule. Built in 1959, this beloved veteran vessel offers a rare glimpse into Denmark's rich seafaring history.

The motor vessel CAROLINE S is Denmark’s oldest surviving coaster still in commercial service. The ship was built in Marstal in 1959 as the youngest of 23 sister ships (the “Caroliners”). They were financed by the Marshall Plan to renew the Danish small-vessel fleet after the war, which represented an innovative quantum leap.

The “CAROLINE S” will call at Aarhus Harbour at Pier 3 in Basin 5 on Monday 31 August and Tuesday 1 September. The Aarhus Maritime Museum is also located here at Hveensgade 4, 8000 Aarhus C.

At the museums office, you can buy coffee and cake and see a small exhibition on “Coasters, Carolines and Frederiksværk ships.” These terms cover an important part of Danish maritime and industrial history, in which the Marstal-built coasters (Caroliners) and iron from Frederiksværk were closely linked. The museum office is open from 10:00 - 19:00.

You will get a unique experience and an authentic story about one of the last old commercial vessels that still exists.with the help of volunteers.
