CULCHIE - Traditionel irish music
Deeply rooted in Ireland’s rich musical traditions, the trio brings classic Irish songs and tunes to life with passion, skill, and genuine love for the music. Audiences can look forward to everything from beloved pub songs and heartfelt ballads to lively drinking songs and spirited instrumental tunes – a treasure trove of Irish music with something for everyone.
Culchie is made up of three seasoned musicians who together boast more than 60 years of performing experience on stages across Denmark and beyond. Their warm and engaging performances have earned them a reputation as outstanding ambassadors for traditional Irish folk music.
Leading the group is Denis McLaughlin, a highly respected figure in Irish folk music. Originally from Derry, Northern Ireland, Denis settled in southern Denmark in the 1980s and quickly became a prominent name on the Danish and European folk scene. With his powerful voice, exceptional musicianship, and natural storytelling ability, he effortlessly delivers everything from intimate ballads and original songs to the classic sing-along pub favourites. Denis accompanies himself on guitar, octave mandola, banjo, bodhrán, and bones.
On fiddle and vocals is Pia Nygaard, a graduate of the Danish National Academy of Music. When she first met Denis McLaughlin at the Strib Winter Festival in 2008, she knew very little about Irish folk music. Since then, she has become a highly regarded member of Denmark’s Irish folk community. Her expressive fiddle playing and beautiful vocals add warmth, elegance, and depth to the band's sound.
Sune Christiansen has spent the past fifteen years immersing himself in Ireland’s rich musical traditions. Through several extended stays in Ireland and a deep passion for the music, he has developed his own distinctive style on banjo, tin whistle, and bodhrán. Sune was mentored by the legendary Barney McKenna of The Dubliners, one of the most influential figures in Irish folk music.
