Divine Accents of Other Voices: Beata Viscera

In the atmospheric medieval crypt of Our Lady’s Church ,the artist Laurits Jongejaninvites visitors to experience a sensory sound installation where the voices of the past meet the technology of the future.

Nine specially constructed aluminium shields emit artificially generated voices inspired by medieval polyphonic choral singing. The result is an immersive soundscape with a metallic, almost otherworldly timbre.

At the same time, the installation’s shields are transformed into sculptural creatures inspired by the dolkhalen – one of the earth’s oldest living animals. What is normally associated with protection, war and civilisation becomes, here, alive and singing. The work explores the relationship between humans, technology and nature, creating an encounter between the historical, the artificial and the non-human.

Within the crypt’s unique acoustics, the artificial voices blend with the history of the space, creating an experience that invites contemplation, reflection and wonder.

The sound piece lasts approximately 40 minutes and is played as a continuous sequence, allowing you to explore the installation at your own pace.
