In Darkness

The bronze sculpture depicts a mother holding her wounded child. In the shadow, the figure of the person responsible for giving the orders is revealed, calmly smoking a cigar, turning away from the victims and the horror he has unleashed.

In Darkness was the first piece I created after Russia invaded Ukraine. I began by looking through images of war victims until I stopped at those that brought me to tears, photos of parents grieving over a dead or injured child. As a parent, I realized the worst thing in the world would not be something bad happening to me, but to my children. I could deeply empathize with the pain and helplessness I saw in those parents’ eyes.  – Anni Laukka

Anni Laukka (1982) is a Finnish artist who works with sculpture, light and shadow. At first glance, her shadow works may appear to be one thing, whilst the light reveals an entirely different figure in the shadow. In this way, she explores the visible and the hidden – and weaves multiple narratives into a single work.
