Last Memory of You

In the shadows, a soldier can be seen saying goodbye to his young child.

The work is inspired by news photographs from the start of the war, in which soldiers bid farewell to their families before setting off to defend their homeland, whilst women and children fled to safer areas. That chaotic moment of farewell, uncertainty and hope has become etched in the artist’s memory. The work revolves around the idea of whether this very moment might be the last memory people have of one another.

Anni Laukka (1982) is a Finnish artist who works with sculpture, light and shadow. At first glance, her shadow works may appear to be one thing, whilst the light reveals an entirely different figure in the shadow. In this way, she explores the visible and the hidden – and weaves multiple narratives into a single work.
