We Still Dream

We Still Dream (2024) is a hand-drawn short animation in which four Ukrainian children take turns dancing. In the background, we hear their dreams and wishes told in their own voices.

Hanna Diadia, a volunteer with the Ukrainian charity Malyn Volonter, interviewed and filmed the children in Ukraine at the artist’s request. I have compiled the children’s filmed movements into a coherent dance through drawing.

The children’s voices are in Ukrainian, and the animation features handwritten subtitles in both English and German. The animation lasts 1 minute and 20 seconds and plays on a continuous loop.

Anni Laukka (1982) is a Finnish artist who works with sculpture, light and shadow. At first glance, her shadow works may resemble one thing, whilst the light reveals an entirely different figure in the shadow. In this way, she explores the visible and the hidden – and weaves multiple narratives into a single work.
