Live Art for Children 2026: YOU SEE

How do you actually see other people?

And how do you think others see you?

Come and have your prejudices and privileges challenged!

In You See , you sit alone with the artist Jamal Gerald in a small pavilion at DOKK1. It is an encounter between two people who do not know each other beforehand and are trying to define their own place in society.

“You see… is a one-to-one performance inspired by my discovery of privilege and the conversations I went on to have about it. I have had conversations where people have felt comfortable and where they have not. I wanted to create a safe space where people can feel confident when discussing these topics, in the hope that they will continue to have these kinds of conversations with others.

During my time with a participant, I will ask a few questions, which will then lead to them picking a card. There will be six cards: race, gender, class, sexual orientation, ability and religion.”

Jamal Gerald is an artist and writer based in Leeds. He is Black, queer and has roots in Jamaica, where his family background also includes Catholic and ritualistic religious traditions. His work often revolves around conversation, identity and the ways in which people position themselves and one another in the world.
