Piano Garden

In the installation *Piano Garden* by Annea Lockwood (NZ), an old piano is placed in the surroundings of Vennelyst Park

Here, nature is allowed to take its course and will gradually take over the piano. Anyone passing by the piano can be inspired to play a note or a melody and experience how its sound and function change as nature creeps in and around it. You can experience Piano Garden during Festugen and for as long as it lasts (until nature reclaims the piano).

Piano Garden is part of Lockwood’s 1969 series Piano Transplants, in which pianos form a series of conceptual sound artworks and text scores, where disused, damaged pianos undergo transformation or destruction by nature – including by being burnt, submerged in water or planted. Piano Drowning has previously been staged at Aarhus Festuge, where a piano was placed at De Tre Broer along Brabrandstien.
