Magical church installation by Den Sorte Skole

Church installation of Den Sorte Skole and Spøgelsesmaskinen

When the sun goes down and darkness takes over, there is a brief moment when everything seems to stand still. Give yourself over to 'Den Blå Time': A sensuous and circular total installation in Our Lady's Church created by Den Sorte Skole and Spøgelsesmaskinen.

The blue hour is a term that covers the time of day when the sun sets and a bluish light appears. A magically beautiful time of day that we often forget to enjoy in the midst of a busy and hectic everyday life.

During the Festival Week, we offer you the opportunity to experience this natural phenomenon in a very special setting.

Slow down when we open the doors to Vor Frue Kirke every evening and immerse yourself in 'Den Blå Time' - a circular installation developed specifically for the church space where sound, light and the cycle of nature merge.

A strong artistic collaboration

Originally created for Christiansborg Castle Church in 2024, the work is now being presented in Aarhus for the first time. The music duo Den Sorte Skole composed the work's soundtrack based on the so-called Shepard's tone - a sound that creates the illusion of a perpetual fall in pitch, symbolically mirroring the repeating rhythm of the day and the cyclical nature of twilight.

The sound wizards from Den Sorte Skole composed and recorded the music, which is based on the so-called 'Shepard's tone'. A sound that creates the illusion of a perpetual drop in pitch and mirrors the repeating pattern of the day at dusk by constantly returning to its starting point.

The lighting design is created by artist Spøgelsesmaskinen (Rune Brink Hansen) and follows the same cyclical logic. 10 lamps in blue glass and metal are placed in a circle. These lamps amplify the transition between light and darkness and form a parallel to the natural course of dusk outside.

"'The Blue Hour' is a work that is not afraid of everything that takes place in the silence between notes. It is often there that something greater can materialise. 'Den Blå Time' is a work that is not afraid of everything that takes place in the silence between notes. It is often there that something greater can emerge," says The Black School about the work.

Curator Majken Overgaard says:

"We hope that the work can help many people rediscover the blue hour. The time when the day releases its grip and darkness gently takes over - where the traditions of the past meet today's need for presence and contemplation."

Den Blå Time is part of the event series 'Rooms that Preach', where the audience is invited to musical explorations of the city's churches and alternative concert spaces.
